FAQs About the October 2003 Primates Meeting and Statement

AAC Press Release

October 2003

What did the Primates statement achieve?

It achieved a significant intervention and brought order where chaos would have reigned.

What really happened?

The Primates affirmed unanimously that Gospel truth is the basis of our unity.

Why was there no discipline of ECUSA?

There is discipline…it is moral and structural in tone and serves as a clear warning about the scheduled consecration.

How was God involved in the process?

People around the globe were fasting and praying for the meeting. It was reported afterwards that there came a point in the meeting on the second day when the Holy Spirit came in power and and that the Primates experienced a new and profound freedom to speak the truth boldly.

How does this statement help us?

It confirms that the stand taken at the Plano conference is the mainstream teaching of the Anglican Communion. We are not alone.

Will the Episcopal Church split?

If Gene Robinson is consecrated, there will be a deep tear in the fabric of our common life both at home and around the Communion.

When will Episcopal oversight begin?

Now! The door for adequate episcopal oversight and protection is open and members of the North American church (both Canadian and ECUSA) have access to it under the Primates and the Archbishop of Canterbury.

What does realignment mean?

Realignment means reordering our relationship for mission because mission can only be based on truth.

Why do we have to wait twelve months?

We don't! Ministry and realignment can begin right now. Working through all of the deep theological, legal and property issues will take more time.

Why all of this fuss over a gay bishop when we have many gay priests?

All Christians are called to live lives of holiness and purity, but a bishop is a symbol which embodies the truth and unity of the church.

Will Gene be a real bishop?

Neither the Archbishop of Canterbury nor the vast majority of Anglican provinces will recognize his Episcopal ministry.

Is the Anglican Communion over?

No!  It is stronger than ever!  It has been renewed by the clear commitment of biblical teaching shown by the Primates.

Are we leaving the Episcopal Church?

No. The Primates are standing with us. It is the Episcopal Church that has departed from the historic faith and order of the Christian Church and the Anglican Communion.

What about our church buildings?

The Primates are addressing this issue by setting up a commission to deal with legal and property issues.

What should I do with my money?

Give generously to the work of the gospel in orthodox and biblical mission and ministry.
